What is sports data science and analytics?
Data science and analytics in sports is essentially the gathering of relevant data, both current and historical, for the purpose of predictive analysis and increasing on-field performance. The practice has been around for longer than most people think, but has most recently caught onto the mainstream in the last ten years. If you haven’t seen the movie “Moneyball”, go check it out to familiarize yourself with the ideas behind sports analytics.
What is the purpose of sports analytics?
The purpose of analytics in sports is to help teams gain a competitive advantage over another team by looking at data for their own team as well as the opponent to make strategic decisions. Teams who practice this at a very high level can yield very high results and lead their teams to victories and even championships.
What sports use analytics?
Nearly all major sports use analytics in some fashion to help their team! In the United States the NFL, NBA, MLB, MLS, NHL, WNBA, NWSL, and the majority of colleges and universities use sports analytics help their teams. Sports analytics got its most popular start in Major League Baseball and has since grown across sports and level of competition.
